About him
Hi, I'm regarded as intelligent but silly, bookish but adventurous, serious but ironic. Bleeding heart liberal, whingeing lefty Guardianista, and proud of it. Was born and brought up in Northern Ireland, went to university in Oxford and have worked as a journalist on local newspapers in England, Scotland and the Channel Islands for 30 years. Now finally trying to pursue a lifelong ambition of writing novels, with creative writing MA at Bath Spa University.
Love language, literature, history, most forms of music. My favourite spectator sport is politics. No Daily Mail or horoscope readers please. And thank you for not smoking. People tell me I look younger than 54, but I don't know. My hair's retaining its colour, even if I'm not retaining it. (But what can you do?) If you're as young as you feel, however, then at 8am on Monday mornings I'm 92.
About his ideal match
To me a woman's most attractive feature is her brain, so I'm looking to meet someone highly intelligent, with ideas and opinions of her own - not necessarily identical to mine, though a shared sense of humour would be good. It irritates me when people stipulate a "gsoh". because it's pointless. (After all, who's going to read a profile containing it and conclude: "Oh well, that rules me out then. I don't have a sense of humour"?) But I believe in the value of laughter whenever possible.
I don't have kids, largely because I never thought I'd be any good at it, following Philip Larkin's advice. But I know many people do, so it's not a deal-breaker for me. Don't have a car either, because I've never really needed one - and my approach is broadly quite green. If you're a global warming denier we're unlikely to get along.
