In His Own Words
About him
I come from an academic background, and enjoy the world of ideas and the arts, but also love the physicality of the outdoors, of music, of touch - and I have plenty of hidden (and not so hidden) shallows.
Medicine has always mattered to me and it keeps me fairly grounded; but I don't define myself by work - life is too big and colourful - and I have a good 'work/life' balance.
I am politically left-leaning, pretty egalitarian in outlook and care about values; but kindness (however indefinable) matters more to me than ideology.
I had a liberal, open-minded religious upbringing and retain some, though not all, of that (I find the questions matter more than the answers).
I like to think I am easy to be around as well as thoughtful, caring and committed to friends, family - and any partner who might choose to explore more of life with me.
I have had an innate desire to bring up children for much of my life. I am at a point where I can also let that go now and embrace so many other things life has to offer. If a partner were open to the possibility, it would be lovely, but a relationship that can combine both a gentle depth of understanding and lightness of touch matters most.
You should be aware that I have an intractable feud with my, otherwise delightful, sister-in-law about the correct proportions for making crumble. For reasons I cannot fathom, she persists if refusing to acknowledge that she is wrong! Siding with her in this matter could just be a deal-breaker..
About his ideal match
I imagine my ideal kind-hearted fellow traveller as open-minded, generous-spirited, fun and adventerous, but with a sensitive streak too; someone who isn't afraid of the tough questions in life, but enjoys living life fully alongside them; someone who is prepared to challenge me (and herself) and enjoys the outdoors and the arts.
But life has taught me that joy is often in the unexpected - so I am prepared - indeed happy! - to be surprised...
There are very few things I would find difficult to accept in a partner, given that we are all, to some extent, bundles of contradictions (or maybe I should just speak for myself?). But I would struggle to cope with someone for whom passive aggression is a frequent means of communication.
What His Friends Say
Sarah said...
I met Jonathan 8 years ago as a colleague at work and am now very pleased to have him as a good friend. My favourite way for us to catch up is on a walk in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. We have dodged rain, thunder storms and blazing sun, and only got lost once.
I have appreciative memories of one of these walks in particular; it was shortly after the death of my sister. Jonathan's kindness is obvious to all, but it took a very special man to offer the wisdom and comforting words that helped sooth my breaking heart. He passed no judgment as I questioned my faith; he is a good man to have at your side on difficult and dark days.
Our conversations about nature as we walk have shown me Jonathan's great sense of responsibility for the environment. It is more than just talk and is reflected in his daily choices, for example when he uses his bike instead of the car, and opts for the train to visit family rather than flying.
Jonathan is one of the most intelligent people I have met, this is clear in our work conversations, but also when he talks about photography or music. What is refreshing is that there is no sense of arrogance or intimidation despite his intellectual superiority. He puts me at ease when I have talked to him about silly mistakes by telling me an anecdote of when he has made a mistake, and he is quite happy to laugh at himself in such circumstance.
We had a lovely day out with a friend and her young son a few years ago at Greenbelt. I was astonished at how great Jonathan was with this young lad despite not having children himself; he was an absolute natural!
If I haven't convinced you already that Jonathan is worth meeting, then my final observation might. He is also a great cook! Jonathan cycled to my house with just 5 ingredients in his bag and it was like an episode of Ready Steady Cook where he produced a delicious meal in half an hour.
Jonathan has so many great qualities to bring to a relationship, I hope he finds someone equally special to share them with.
