In His Own Words
About him
If quirky intellectuals press your buttons, my fingers stand poised, ready to play curious tunes on the organ of your mind. (But I do know that that’s not what every woman wants from a man.)
You might want to know more about those quirks before deciding whether to add me to your longlist…
I spend my working hours trying to make sense of the relationship between the policy wonk games which shape public services under the English system of Government and the human reality of what happens when people who need support from the state try to get it. And I spend much of my evenings and weekends attempting to work out the details of an eccentric and foolishly ambitious philosophical system, whose merits are at present visible only to me. But I promise not to try to explain either of those projects unless asked to.
I’m not entirely at home in the physical world. I visit it often, but as a tourist – appreciating the sights at least as much as the natives do, but not quite familiar with its ways.
I’m chronically honest, and I don’t do resentment. These are conventionally taken to be virtues, but they’re not in real life what everyone wants in a partner.
I’m the kind of man who comes out of a movie wanting to talk about how it achieves its effects by playing on genre expectations. If you’d rather talk about whether you approve of how the lead characters behaved, you might find this frustrating.
I have a daughter, now living in London, who is at once alarmingly like her father and clear-headed about what a peculiar upbringing he gave her.
I’m happy much of the time with my own company – I don’t have to be with people all the time, though I’m not (I hope) embarrassing to take out in public. But I miss having a woman to share things with. Plausible research suggests that women don’t much need men to be happy, but I do think men become odder if they don’t have a woman – so I’d be pleased if you’re not convinced by the evidence.
About his ideal match
Someone I can imagine having frequent conversations with for decades and rarely feeling boring or being bored.
Someone with a shared sense of the poetry and tragicomedy of life.
Concretely, perhaps, someone to go to arty movies with, and for walks in the fells. But neither of those is a red line.
