In Her Own Words

About her

Close friends have described me as thoughtful, warm, funny, creative, curious, surprising, insightful and clever. What utterly delightful people! But I am also quite self-sufficient ... perhaps too much so which can make it hard to get close to me at times.

I write about science and tech for a living (written for the Economist, Guardian, the Independent amongst other publications and am currently researching a book about computer science) but I am equally interested in opera, theatre, art, museums, music, and literature.

My degree is in physics (although it's a lifetime ago since I was juggling all those scary equations).

Popular culture: fan of Fargo, Veep, love The Thick of it, and … I can't give up the Archers (that mix of mundanity and madness always draws me back in).

Books on hand: Borges' Labyrinths, Gladwell's What the Dog Saw and Blink. Zinsser's On Writing Well (always need some help...), Woolf's The Waves, and Yates' The Art of Memory.
Actively reading: The River of Consciousness (Oliver Sacks), Dance Psychology (Peter Lovatt), Surfing Uncertainty (Andy Clark), Human and Machine Consciousness (David Gamez). They are making my brain hurt...

I dislike self-pity, football, and rice-pudding.

Music matters a great deal - I play the piano, and I've been re-learning the violin for the last three years. Started playing in local chamber orchestra last year (quite proud of that).
I also draw and make things if suitably inspired.
What else....I'm apparently a terrifyingly competitive scrabble player. Don't believe a word of it.
I have two delightful dogs (whippets) who I walk 5 or 6 miles every day, I also trail run once a week, do yoga, and high intensity interval training. Sounds exhausting. So if you're not reasonably active then it's not going to work. Btw, how to judge this site's weird 'body' categories? I've decided 'athletic (size 10, run around a lot..). Not sure. But challenge me to a slow marathon if you dare.

My outlook on life is probably hey, let's give it a go...!

About her ideal match

I'm looking for someone clever, kind, someone as intensely curious about the world as I am, and also someone who is culturally quite sophisticated. But with all that, a pretty silly sense of humour is going to be essential. I am as happy spending a week exploring museums in Florence as I am wandering across fields with my dogs to a local pub. I need both kinds of things. Deal breakers? Hmmm - far more than I would care to admit. Chemistry is essential - physical and intellectual - it's strangely indefinable, hard to find, but one knows when it's there ... and when it's not.
Maths changes In a great relationship i.e. one + one = three or four or even five on a good day! I've experienced that and would love to again.

I'm busy with work and quite recently out of a long relationship so I'm finding my way a bit with this (apologies in advance). If any of the above strikes a chord, message me.

Initial deal breakers:
Anyone who uses the phrase 'glass half full' in their profile!
Pointy goatee beards (no..). Not a fan of any beardyness.
Brexiteers (I'm a remainer)
Patronising wotsits
Anyone looking for a casual fling - please don't bother getting in touch.
